Cheap Concept2 Model D Indoor Rowing Machine

Okay, so you can buy a cheaper rower for about 1/2 the price. But I did a lot of research and read a lot of reviews. Cheaper rowers, as I have found, will break within a few years. Where as after reading all the Concept 2 Model D reviews, it's more of a life time commitment. They use these machines in some sort of international rowing competition, and to me, means a great deal. I have seen the exact same one in a few different gyms too.

Here is my thought process - spend $450 on a cheap rowing machine that got mediocre reviews, that may or may not break down in 3 or 4 years.

OR...

Spend $900 on a rowing machine that gets 5 star reviews, are used in international competitions, and in various health clubs.

It is sturdy and seemingly indestructible and I imagine it will outlive me. The rower is easy to use and the monitor allows a just row funtion. The pull handle and chain provide a smooth and quiet row. I ride bikes off and on through out the year. Winter in CO can be very hard to ride. I've used my road bike on a trainer but too much dust and too much wear on the gears. Keiser M3 Indoor Cycle This person who gave a 3 star rateing has no idea of what they are talking about. I have used both bikes and there are major differences that become obvious in minutes. Although the Schwinn Bike has a bit more adjustability (especially in the handlebars), It's ride feel like you are off road; it is so bumpy and sloppy, especially at lower RPMs. The M3 has 24 gear levels (I think) and the highest I have worked at was gear 16, so the person who says that the M3 wasnt challenging enough must be an olympic level athlete if they cant get their heart rate up high enough. I've had my Schwinn 240 for a couple weeks now. Overall, I'm impressed with it. It suits the needs of my family (wife, daughter, me) very well and we've been using it daily.

Several have commented on the condition of the packaging after it was delivered. My 1st Schwinn 240 was delivered by UPS in such awful condition that I refused delivery and had it shipped back. The box had multiple flaps that were open, one strap that was broken, gouges in the side, clearly damage internal Styrofoam, jumbled parts drifting around inside the box. It looked like it had been dropped from a plane without a parachute. Even the UPS guy commented on the destruction. To their credit, Amazon promptly sent another one which arrived in much better shape.

Assembly - Straightforward as long as you can properly interpret the pictures. I assembled it myself without problems in a little over an hour with the tools provided. However the screws in the instructions were given letter designations that the screws in the packaging didn't have. I figured it out, but it should not have been this complicated.

Exercise console/computer - As others have stated, there is little in the documentation to describe HOW to use the various functions. I'm still trying to figure out the heart rate program. I know in principle what it's supposed to do, but can't get it to do it because the proper use of the program is not described. I'm sure I'll eventually figure it out.

Pros - It's amazingly quiet. Even when the room is quiet, you can barely hear the thing! It seems to be well constructed and sturdy. I'm not a big fan of the seat adjustment screw concept, because the seat has to be changed frequently for the three users of the bike, but it is a minimal hassle and holds the seat firmly with little sway. The ride is smooth and the transition between levels of resistance is smooth also. The heart rate grip system seems to work well and is pretty accurate compared to my own pulse check. I haven't yet checked the telemetry system with my Polar heart rate monitor. The seat is comfortable to me, but my wife thinks it is a bit firm.

I'm happy that I purchased it and hope that is stands the test of time (and my family!).

I spent several weeks and hours reading about and looking at various models of recumbent exercise bikes. My wife and I are in our mid 60s and want to avoid high impact stuff. I couldn't find a Schwinn 240 in stores on display so I took a chance and ordered it. It took a couple hours to assemble and it wasn't difficult at all. The bike is smooth and fits both me at 6' 4" and my wife who is 5' 2". The only annoying part of using the bike is having to reset the seat each time either of us use it, which is a bit of a nuisance. Seems like they could made it a little quicker to use without having to remove the threaded knob bolt and adjust the seat to the setting you want, then re-insert the bolt and hand tighten it.


Oh yes... it's heavy. It has rollers to help you move it, but don't think you can just whisk this bike from room to room each day! And it's sturdy and quiet. I paid $470 including freight and tax. Sears wanted $599! No wonder they have poor sales records! I did have a bit of trouble programming the computer panel. It takes a few minutes. I had to call customer service. They kept me on hold for at least 20 minutes(seriously) before I got a guy to walk me through it. I was not impressed with his attitude. While he was helpful, he was in a huge hurry and suggested I read the manual again, which he reminded me was all he was doing over the phone. So I wouldn't count on superior customer service from this Company, which is Nautilus. They bought out Nordic Track and Schwinn and they have a self-important attitude, like other corporations with multiple product lines. They want to sell it, but they don't believe they have to devote adequate service time after the sale.
